Sir,-The importance of maintaining and strengthening friendly relations with China at the present time through personal, cultural, technical, and business contacts can hardly be over-emphasized. One of the most effective ways in which this can be done is by giving every possible assistance to China's 14 Chris- tian universities. In spite of the recent happenings in China, we are glad to report that in all these great Chinese educational institutions Christian Chinese and western staff members (a considerable number of the latter are British) continue to give a first-class education to some 9,000 prospective doctors, teachers, scientists, agriculturists, engineers, leaders in business, industry, and the Church. Such changes or adjustments as have been called for to date in administration and curriculum by the new régime have not involved any important restrictions on religious activities.

The aim of these universities is to serve the Chinese people, and if their work can be adequately maintained they will continue to play a most important role in the building up of a new China, but they must be kept finan- cially strong, in order to maintain standards, retain well-qualified staff, keep equipment up to date, give assistance to needy students, and remain in a position to continue their academic and religious teaching on much the same lines as heretofore. To-day they are in urgent need of increased funds from Great Britain.

The China Christian Universities Associa- tion, which is entirely interdenominational, is the organization in this country which seeks to maintain British interests in these universi- ties, and it has decided to issue a special Stand by the Universities" appeal. There is no difficulty in remitting funds, and the
